The Use of Essential Oils in Ruminants as Modifiers of Rumen Microbial Fermentation

Antibiotic ionophores have been very successful in improving these effi ciencies, but its use in animal feeds is facing reduced social acceptance. For this reason, other alternatives to control specifi c microbial populations are currently being investigated. Some essential oils have antimicrobial activities resulting in reduced peptidolysis, deamination and methanogenesis. Because the effects of essential oils are diet and pH dependent, the selection of the appropriate essential oil will depend on the specifi c objectives and target animal. Moreover, because essential oils may act at different levels in the energy and protein metabolic pathways, their careful selection and combination may provide a useful tool to effectively manipulate rumen microbial fermentation.

The Effects of Use Medicinal Plants on Rumen Fermentation Parameters in Ruminants
Rumen is a persistent and specific ecosystem consists of bacteria, protozoa and fungus where feed fermentation takes place in it. Produced Hydrogen in rumen can be used in the synthesis of the volatile fatty acids and the microbial protein and its excess would be eliminated through the production of Methane by methanogenesis. Nutritionists have tried to find ways to decrease loss and energy and...

BACKGROUND: The use of antibiotics as feed additive in animal feeds due to the appearance of residues in milk and meat and their effects on human health has restricted. Two of essential oils with high potential for use in ruminant diet are Mentha piperita (peppermint) and Mentha pulegium (pennyroyal) essential oil. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of essential oils...
متن کاملNatural Products as Manipulators of Rumen Fermentation
There is increasing interest in exploiting natural products as feed additives to solve problems in animal nutrition and livestock production. Essential oils and saponins are two types of plant secondary compounds that hold promise as natural feed additives for ruminants. This paper describes recent advances in research into these additives. The research has generally concentrated on protein met...
